The IU Media School has a new dean dean after a nearly two-year search.

David Tolchinsky is a professor of radio, TV and film at Northwestern University and serves as director of its Pritzker Pucker Studio Lab, which supports media making centered on mental health. His appointment was announced Thursday.

He served as chair of Northwestern’s department of radio, TV and film from 2007 to 2018. Tolchinsky also sports a portfolio of screenwriting and producer credits, including on horror movies such as the 2022 supernatural horror, Night’s End.

He will replace interim dean Walter Gantz, who has run the media school over the course of the search since 2021 after founding dean James Shanahan stepped down after six years.

Tolchinsky starts at IU on Sept. 11.
