Suspect in Columbus shooting that wounded two arrested

The suspect in a shooting last Thursday in Columbus that left a man and a child wounded was taken into custody following a brief car chase.

According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, a car being driven by suspect Robbie Perez, 35, was spotted in Johnson County Friday shortly before 11 a.m. Franklin Police Department officers located the vehicle and attempted to stop the car before beginning a pursuit.

When police stopped Perez’s vehicle, he “was found to be suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to the report. Perez was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment, and police technicians recovered a firearm in the vehicle.

An investigation revealed the shooting was the result of a “long-term feud” between Perez and his brother, George Perez Jr., who was one of the shooting victims. The 36-year-old Perez has since been released from the hospital, but his 3-year-old son remains in the hospital in critical condition. The boy’s age was originally reported to be 2.

Perez has been charged with counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
