Officials say a man attacked and seriously injured an on-duty correctional officer outside the Monroe County jail over the weekend.
The sheriff’s office says Christopher Head used a Thermos to strike Sergeant Avery Brahaum while he was conducting checks behind the jail facility Saturday. It says Brahuam was hospitalized and required seven staples to repair the head wound.
The sheriff’s office says Brahaum managed to detain Head despite the injury. Head is being charged with battery on a public safety official, a level-five felony.
In an emailed statement, the sheriff’s office called the attack “unprovoked” but noted Sergeant Brahaum recognized Head from previous stints inside the jail.
Online court records don’t show an attorney representing Head as of Monday morning.
According to the sheriff’s office, Bloomington Police were already pursuing Head following attacks on people using the B-Line trail. The statement didn’t specify when or where the alleged attacks occurred but said Head had been “terrorizing people.”
Police and sheriff officials didn’t immediately respond to inquiries over the weekend.
