The National Weather Service reported four confirmed tornadoes touched down in Johnson, Monroe, Daviess, Martin and Dubois counties on Sunday.

Ted Funk, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service Indianapolis, said the tornado in Johnson County was on the ground for 9 to 10 minutes.

“We estimated winds anywhere from about 90 to 110 miles an hour," he said. "We did estimate 115 in a few spots, so technically then that is the very low end of EF-2 in Johnson County although most of that tornado was EF-1.”

The tornado that went through Martin and Dubois Counties reached an EF-2 classification with winds at 120 miles per hour. One fatality has been reported so far. It was also on the ground about 10 minutes and traveled the farthest distance – more than nine miles.

“It produced a lot of EF-1 damage. EF-2 tornado damage starts at 111 miles per hour," Funk said. "A lot of times the winds were a little bit less than that. But it maxes at at 120."

The National Weather Service has not reported any other deaths yet connected to Sunday’s storms. The tornado in Monroe County was an EF-1 class with peak winds at 100 miles per hour. It traveled more than four miles in seven minutes.

The tornado that tore through Daviess and Martin counties was also an EF-1 with peak winds of 100 miles per hour. It traveled about one-and-a-half miles in five minutes.
