Crews are working to patch and repair the glass atrium, which suffered the most damage.

The West Baden Springs Hotel is undergoing repairs after recovering suffering damage to their atrium on Sunday.

Chuck Franz, CEO of the French Lick Resort, said the hotel was hit by hail for about 20 minutes. Within the last five minutes, the hail got to be the size of baseballs and shattered the glass atrium.

“I’ve never heard anything like it, but I’ve never seen hail that size either,” Franz said. “Those panes of glass have been up there 120 years so I would imagine we’ve never seen hail that size here.”

Franz said the hotel was at 50 percent capacity and that there were no injuries.

The golf course and the roof were damaged but have already been repaired.

Franz said he does not know how long it will take to fix the glass atrium or how much it will cost.

“It was very, very localized unfortunately; it was centered on the West Baden atrium,” Franz said. “All the rooms are fine, the roofs are fine. The only thing that’s off limits is the atrium until it’s safe for guests.”

The hotel has alternate spaces to hold events as well. Franz said the hotel plans to upgrade the material of the building to avoid future damage.
