A new state law criminalizes anyone who gets within 25 feet of an on-duty law enforcement officer after being told to stop.

A Paoli man who stole a police vehicle and eluded capture Tuesday was arrested early this morning without incident in southern Greene County.

Indiana State Police and officers from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office pulled over Eric King, 41, on US 231 in Daviess County and attempted to take him into custody on a warrant for escape.

According to a state police release, King refused to comply and fled the scene in a car. Officers believe the car ran out of gas, and King pulled into a private drive. Officers again found King, but he "was able to gain control of a police vehicle, which he used to ram into another police vehicle."

King took off and eventually crashed into a field in southern Greene County, where police were unable to locate him.

However, a little after 4 a.m. today, police located King and took him into custody.
