Increase in COVID spread through end of July, after stable summer

The Indiana Department of Health's seven-day average for COVID-19 cases, which is updated every Wednesday, is 115 – up from 102 the week before.

The current average of daily reported cases reflects the cases reported through mid-July.

Despite the increase, Indiana Regenstrief Institute Researcher Shaun Grannis said spread has been relatively stable through the summer.

Grannis said COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths are also stable. But he said Regenstrief will keep updating its own public COVID dashboard.

“We want to keep watching because we know that the virus has mutated several times, and we want to make sure that we're tracking its activity,”  Grannis said.

According to Regenstrief’s website, last July between 1,200 to 3,000 people were getting tested daily, compared to 180 to 360 people this month.

Last month, Indiana counted 47 COVID-19 deaths. Grannis said it’s likely these deaths are people who fall into vulnerable categories, such as older adults or people with prior health conditions.

"And so making sure that you're vaccinated, that you're protected enough, makes a lot of sense for those individuals."

Regenstrief’s dashboard said the seven day average of daily positive tests was 34 on Monday, with 20 percent of tests coming back positive.

Nationally, wastewater concentration for COVID-19 has been on the rise since June 21.
