IU move-in: What students and parents need to know

Move in for most Indiana University students begins this week and continues through next week. There are more than 12,000 students moving into 23 IU-owned residences this year. Here’s what students and families need to know before moving in this year.

When do I check in?

Students moving into a residence hall can check their move-in dates on the IU housing website. Students who stayed through the summer began check-ins last week. Most students will be arriving from Aug. 11-20. Classes start Aug. 21.

International students will continue to check in Tuesday and Wednesday. Students in Marching Hundred and some living-learning communities will move in Friday. All remaining students can move in starting Aug. 13.

Where do I check in?

Students arriving before Aug. 16 will either check in at the DeVault Alumni Center (until Aug. 11) or Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall (Aug. 13-15).The buildings will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for Aug. 13 (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Check-ins must enter through stadium gate 11 on the 46 bypass side of the stadium. There are road closures on 17th Street and Dunn Street, but drivers can reroute through Fee Lane to bypass them.

Once the university check-in is complete, students can check in to their residence hall and begin move-in. Students moving in after Aug. 15 will check in directly to their residence hall.

Where do I park?

Directions and parking for each dorm is available through the IU housing website. Students can use circle drives outside of the dorms to unload. Same-day parking is available at the Atwater and East garages. Overnight parking is available in the White, Purple and Orange lots at the stadium.

Students keeping a car on campus can use the One.iu parking permit link to find available permits. Students can purchase an ST pass, but may be eligible for other passes, such as campus housing (CH) passes. The ST pass allows students to park at the stadium and a few designated lots around campus. It also allows for overnight parking at the stadium and after-hours parking in some employee lots. You can find more information through IU’s parking website

What can I do to prepare?

Residential Programs provide a preparation page as students get ready to move in, including a checklist, move-in directions and a contact form for questions. First-time move-ins can utilize IU’s packing list to determine what to bring. Students in university-owned apartments should be aware of prohibited items before moving in.

The Indiana Daily Student released its annual International Student and Parent Survival guides that have useful information for first-time move-ins.
