IU men to play defending champion UConn in Empire Classic opener

The Indiana men’s basketball team will face defending national champion Connecticut in the opening game of the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday, Nov. 19.

The Hoosiers and Huskies will tip off at 1 p.m., followed by Texas and Louisville at 3 p.m., the tournament announced Monday.

The losers will meet in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, with the championship game at 7 p.m.

Indiana last played in the Empire Classic in 2013.

The games will mark the return to Madison Square Garden for head coach Mike Woodson, who was drafted by the Knicks in 1980. He was also a head coach for the Knicks from 2011-14 and an assistant with the Knicks in 2020-21 before taking the IU job.

The Hoosiers open their season at home on Nov. 7 against Florida Gulf Coast.
