Indianapolis Animal Care Services is suspending intake of animals due to a bacterial strain within the shelter.

According to a press release Wednesday evening, staff members are treating animals with antibiotics to help contain the strain, Streptococcus equi zooepidemicus. Samples are being sent to Purdue University for testing.

The shelter is expected to resume animal intake Monday under the advice of medical experts.

The release says animals treated with antibiotics are still eligible for adoption during the suspended intake.

Staff is coordinating with animal welfare partners to evaluate animals that have recently been taken to the shelter.
