Mary Ferdon (R) won the mayoral race in Columbus with 73% of the vote.

Republican Mary Ferdon has been elected to be the next mayor of Columbus.

Ferdon beat her opponent, independent Sean Burton, with 73% of the vote. She will replace Mayor Jim Lienhoop, who has held office since 2016. Lienhoop announced last year he would not run for a third term.

“I’m very appreciative of this opportunity…I’ve worked for the city for over eight years, and we’ve had a great mayor, and so I hope to continue a lot of the good work he has started,” Ferdon said.

A resident of Columbus for over 30 years, Ferdon works for the city of Columbus as Executive Director of Administration/Community Development. Her campaign emphasized public safety and health, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

“Always public safety is a priority, so I will continue to work with police and fire on how we can increase our training and how we can partner with other agencies to make sure that we have top of the line public safety units.”

Ferdon said she looks forward to continuing working on ongoing community projects, such as the development of NexusPark.

Ferdon’s term begins January 1.
