The City of Bloomington and Duke Energy Substation plans to place the first mural on the substation’s walls at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The announcement came after Bloomington and Duke solidified their plans in August, arranging to cover the substation’s six walls with murals. Given the size of the anticipated mural, the project will unfold in multiple stages.

The first stage this Thursday will cover the wall on the northwest corner of West 11th Street and North Rogers Street.

When the partnership was announced earlier this year, arts administrators, members of the Bloomington Arts Commission and residents from Maple Heights and Crestmont began searching for local artists to help create a design.

Eric Agyemang-Dua Jr., Eva Allen, Sue A. Chae and Caitlyn Clark were selected to work with the stakeholders to develop designs based on themes chosen by community workshops and surveys. The designs focus on Bloomington's Indigenous nature, wildlife, sustainability and diversity.

Since then, Duke Energy Foundation has contributed $25,000 toward the project. This will be presented in a check Thursday at the substation.

The mural will be completed in Spring 2024, with the final design including a “community painting day” for Bloomington residents to add their personal touch to the artwork.
