Terre Haute's Bennett says it's business as usual before term ends

Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said it’s business as usual before his 16 years in office is up January 1.

“I want to make sure they hit the ground running, I don't want any gray areas or anything that we couldn't talk about ahead of time, in preparation,” Bennett said.

The four-term Republican mayor was ousted in the November general election by political newcomer Democrat Brandon Sakbun.

Bennett said the master plan for Fairbanks Park is almost done and the overpass at Thirteenth and Eighth Avenue continues to move forward.

“The Rea Park Clubhouse we got our bids back for that, we want to move forward with that project. So we will be next month. Herz-Rose project is getting closer and closer to some construction documents.”

Bennett said the Larry Bird museum off of the new convention center should open early next year. That project has been delayed due to supply chain issues and customization of presentation equipment.

Sakbun announced this week he hired Captain Darrick Scott as Terre Haute’s next fire chief and says more announcements are coming as he builds his administration to take over January 1.
