Alpha Phi Alpha became the second fraternity at Indiana University to be suspended this semester.

The fraternity was suspended on Dec. 6. for dishonest conduct, hazing and retaliation. It joins Delta Upsilon, which was suspended Nov. 27.

The decision comes from a mutual suspension agreement between Alpha Phi Alpha leadership and Dr. Lamar Hylton, vice provost for student life at IU. A statement from IU media relations executive director Mark Bode said, “this decision is in the interest of the health, safety, and wellbeing of the chapter members and the campus community.”

The suspension is an elevation from Alpha Phi Alpha’s previous cease and desist for hazing, which began Sept. 1.

There are currently 10 organizations suspended from IU, meaning they are disbanded from the university. There are three organizations on cease and desist this semester, meaning there is an immediate threat or ongoing investigation.

Indiana University has an anti-hazing policy listed in its code of conduct. The university defines hazing as anything that could endanger, abuse, degrade or intimidate someone in a group. Students can report hazing through the Office of Student Conduct.

The chapter may be able to return to campus as long as it is not expelled. The chapter will be eligible to return to campus in December 2026 if it meets all university requirements and expectations in the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life Extension Policy.
