Former Bloomington mayor John Fernandez has been named as a Democratic representative to the Monroe County Election Board.

Fernandez succeeds Monroe County Democratic Party Chair David Henry, who resigned earlier this month to run for a county council at-large spot in 2024. Henry will remain the party chair.

Fernandez was Bloomington’s mayor from 1995-2003 and is currently the Executive Vice President for Innovative and Strategic Partnerships at the Dimension Mill. He has been serving as a proxy member on the board.

“On behalf of our Democratic Community, I thank John for filling this crucial role ahead of the 2024 election,” Henry said in a press release. “Having experienced public servants at the helm of our elections will help guide us through what we all hope is a smooth election season for our whole community.”

The board is made up of three individuals – Fernandez, Republican representative Judith Benckart and Monroe County Clerk Nicole Browne.

The board oversees all federal, state, county, city and school board elections in Monroe County.
