A Bloomington man has been taken into custody in connection with a pair of recent robberies, including one at the IU Credit Union on Tuesday.

And it was the note he handed the teller at the bank that gave the suspect away.

According to a Bloomington Police Department release, officers responded to a panic alarm at the IU Credit Union on 17th Street a little before 4 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arriving, officers learned the bank had just been robbed and began searching the area for a man, who was described “wearing a tan coat, black pants, and a dark-colored face covering.”

Inside the bank, investigators learned the man approached a teller and handed the employee a note. Once given money from the draw, he fled southbound from the bank. However, on the back of the note was the name, Byron Johnson.

After looking through police records, officers determined that Johnson matched the description given by bank employees. He also matched the description of a man who allegedly robbed the Circle K gas station on East Third Street at around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Officers searched BMV records and found a black 2011 Chevrolet Equinox registered to a Byron Gregory Johnson. They began searching for the vehicle around town, and at about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday located the vehicle with Johnson inside in the parking lot of Kinser Flats on North Kinser Pike.

While being searched, Johnson “dropped a sock and attempted to conceal it with his foot. The officer retrieved the sock and observed that it had a large amount of cash in it,” according to the release.

Johnson, 35 and listed as unhoused, was interviewed at BPD, then transferred to the Monroe County Jail and charged with two counts of felony robbery, one count of felony intimidation and two misdemeanor charges of theft.
