Monroe County Solid Waste Management District is taking cut Christmas trees for disposal from Dec. 26 through Jan. 13.
The recycling program is in partnership with Republic Services and Good Earth, LLC. The trees will be composted, so lights and decorations must be removed.
“It's the naked natural evergreens,” said Joey Long, operations director for Monroe County Solid Waste Management District. “We don't want no ornaments, no tassel, no nothing left on the tree.”

Trees can be dropped off at recycling centers during business hours. The centers will also take some decorations, depending on the material. Accepted materials can be found here.
For residents with city trash pickup, the city will begin taking trees starting Dec. 26 and continue through Jan. 18. They will only take live trees and wreaths, and all lights and decorations must be removed. Trees should not be bundled or wrapped. Trees will only be collected on each customer’s bi-weekly yard waste collection day. More information can be found on the city’s sanitation page.
Artificial tree pickup must be scheduled through the city at 812-349-3443, and a large item pickup fee of $10 will be added to the resident’s bill.
