The Board of Public works approved $873,378 in contracts with E&B Paving last week to improve several Bloomington greenways.

The Anderson, Indiana-based contractor will install speed bumps, signs, flashing beacons and other features for the Morningside Greenway project as well as the Hawthorne, Weatherstone, and Miller Drive Greenway project.

E&B Paving will also be responsible for restoring the area with topsoil, sodding and trees.

The city introduced the greenway projects in its 2019 transportation plan. The proposed changes to city streets would slow vehicles for the benefit of cyclists and pedestrians.

When the bicycle and pedestrian safety commission discussed plans earlier this year, the city anticipated the total cost of the project to be around $350,000. Project manager Jeremy Inman said the cost increase reflects the expanding scope of the project, which will also include work on the Hillside-Weatherstone intersection

Inman said construction should begin in late March or early April.
