Indiana State University is beginning the new year without an athletic director.

On Tuesday, the university announced Sherard Clinkscales had resigned effective Dec. 31 “to pursue other opportunities.”

“I will forever be grateful for the many years I served our student athletes, coaches, and community as the Director of Athletics at Indiana State University, and I will miss all the hard-working, talented members of the Athletics Department,” Clinkscales said in the release.

Clinkscales had been the Sycamores’ athletic director since 2016.

“Indiana State University thanks Sherard for his contributions and advancements to Sycamore Athletics,” ISU president Deborah Curtis said in a press release. “Under his leadership, he has helped raise the standard among ISU's Athletics programs. We extend our best wishes to him in all his future endeavors.”

The university named Angie Lansing the interim athletic director on Wednesday.

Lansing has worked in the Indiana State athletic department for the past 17 years, most recently serving as Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women's Administrator. She served as the interim athletic director in 2016 before Clinkscales was hired.

“Indiana State University is very fortunate to have an administrator of Angie’s caliber on staff who can fill this important role. Indiana State has the utmost confidence and given her experience and vision for the Sycamores; she is the ideal candidate for this position. At this time, the University’s priority is to continue to elevate the tremendous work being done by our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff in Sycamore Athletics,” Curtis said in a news release.

Lansing was a former track and field and cross country star at Indiana State in the late 1990s and is a member of the Sycamores' Athletics Hall of Fame.
