Monroe County Auditor Catherine Smith (D) is running for county treasurer this year.
Smith’s candidacy in the treasurer’s race is unique because her name will only appear on the May primary ballot if she is selected in a caucus held by the Monroe County Democratic Party.
The treasurer’s seat was left vacant Jan. 1 because Jessica McClellan resigned from the position to serve as Bloomington’s city controller under Mayor Kerry Thomson.

As a result, a Democratic caucus to fill the treasurer’s vacancy will be held Jan. 20.
If Smith is selected in the caucus, she will become the incumbent treasurer in the May primary and another caucus must be held for the county auditor’s seat.
