Now-former Monroe County auditor Catherine Smith (D) has been selected as the new county treasurer.
Smith assumed the role through a Democratic vacancy caucus held Saturday. She will now run as the incumbent treasurer in the May primary.
The caucus became necessary when Jessica McClellan resigned as treasurer to serve as Bloomington’s city controller.
A separate caucus must now be held to fill the auditor’s seat.
Monroe County Democratic Party Chair David Henry said that caucus has tentatively been set for Feb. 10.
Candidates must file paperwork three days before the caucus to run. So far, the only candidate is Brianne Gregory, Monroe County’s financial director.
A separate caucus must also be held for the District 5 seat on the Bloomington City Council. The current District 5 representative, Shruti Rana, will step down Feb. 7 to move to Missouri.
Henry said a date has not been selected for that caucus. The party has 30 days after Feb. 7 to fill the vacancy.
Both the auditor and treasurer seats are up for election this year, along with the county surveyor, coroner, at-large county council seats, and two of the three county commissioners’ seats.
