Skunk rabies has been spotted in two southern Indiana counties, making them the first confirmed cases in Indiana since 2004.
The disease, which is typically present in northern Kentucky, was identified in Clark and Washington counties.
The Indiana Department of Health is urging residents to vaccinate their pets and to keep a safe distance from wildlife. The department is working with partners to determine if other southern Indiana counties have been affected.
Hoosiers can help by reporting sick or dead skunks to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish & Wildlife Health Program. Some rabid animals foam at the mouth, while others may act either aggressively or dull and unresponsive.
