Legendary Indiana author Dan Wakefield has died at 91.

Wakefield grew up in Indianapolis and wrote more than 20 books. Two of them, “Going All the Way” and “Starting Over,” were made into major motion pictures. He also created the NBC television series, “James at 15.”

He began his career as a sports correspondent for the Indianapolis Star and was freelance writer for Harpers and The New York Times Magazine. As a 23-year-old in 1955, Wakefield covered the Emmett Till trial for “The Nation.”

In 2018 and 2019, Wakefield collaborated with saxophonist Sophie Faught on a series of stage shows pursuing themes in story and song. The audio of some of those stage shows was repurposed for a limited radio series on WFIU called, “The Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam.”

Patrick Beane spent three decades as a journalist at The Herald-Times in Bloomington before joining the staff at WFIU/WTIU News. He began his career at the newspaper after graduating from Indiana University in 1987 and was the sports editor from 2010-2020. His duties at the paper included writing, copy editing, page design and managing the sports department.
