Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony marks Monroe County’s Community Kitchen fundraising campaign for a new express facility.
Executive Director Vicki Pierce says last year the facility on Bloomington’s near west-side served nearly 40,000 carry-out meals.
“It is definitely a location where we're needed. This is the largest concentration of low-income families in our community, and just access to regular nutrition is vital for them,” Pierce said.
The new facility will replace the aging building on the same site it’s served as the Community Kitchen Express since 2001.
Pierce says the campaign “Invest in Express” goal is to raise $150,000.

“We've built a new building and got a food truck on the road and replaced all of our old vans. And so this is sort of the last old guard piece that needs to be retired,” she said.
Construction is anticipated to start in May. Pierce says they are working with the Bloomington Housing Authority to arrange another location within Crestmont to serve meals while the project is underway.
