Comcast to donate 100 laptops to Bloomington residents

Comcast is donating 100 laptops to individuals and families in Bloomington through a partnership with city officials and community leaders.

The effort is meant to “bridge the digital divide” for low-income and older residents, according to a Tuesday news release from the company.

It’s part of Project UP, Comcast’s 10-year, $1 billion pledge to advance programs and community partnerships that connect people to the Internet.

United Way of South Central Indiana and Bloomington Parks & Recreation selected the laptop recipients.

They include residents working with the Financial Stability Alliance and families participating in Banneker Community Center programs, including early education and low-cost summer camp programs.

Recipients have been notified and can pick up their laptops starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Banneker Community Center, 930 W. 7th St.

Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson, representatives from United Way and Comcast, and community partners will attend the event.

Comcast says it has made more than $3 million in donations to community-based organizations in Indiana over the last three years, focusing on initiatives to foster digital equity.

The company also offers low-cost, high-speed broadband service for eligible low-income households and two Lift Zones in Bloomington. Lift Zones are Wi-Fi hotspots where children and adults can freely access the Internet.
