The Bloomington Simtra BioPharma campus is expanding. The campus is beginning construction on a manufacturing building that will allow for three new production lines, it announced at a groundbreaking Tuesday.
Simtra is a pharmaceutical and biomedical manufacturing company specialized in the production of sterile injectables, such as medicines that come in a vial or syringe. It became an established standalone company from Baxter International in October 2023. Simtra has two facilities – its second facility is in Germany.
The new two-story, 150,000-square-foot building will cost more than $250 million and create hundreds of new jobs in Bloomington, company officials said.
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb was also in attendance. He praised Simtra for the work and experience it brings to the state.
“These are the jobs of the future when you talk about providing therapies, providing the client or the customer with quality-of-life improvements, and that's what they do here at Simtra,” Holcomb said.
The Monroe County Council approved a nearly $10.4 million tax break for the expansion in March.
Pat Adams, general manager for the Bloomington site, said this expansion will double production.
“Ultimately, it gives us the opportunity to reach more patients,” he said. “And that's what this is about.”
