It’s a great year to be an Olympic swimming fan in Indiana.

This year, six Hoosier natives have qualified, the most to ever go to the games.

This includes siblings Alex and Aaron Shackell from Carmel, Drew Kibler from Carmel, Lilly King from Evansville, Blake Pieroni from Chesterton and Luke Whitlock from Noblesville.

Alex Shackell, 17 years old and the first women’s swim qualifier out of Carmel, punched her ticket after finishing second in the 200 butterfly. She will also compete in the 4x200 freestyle relay.

Whitlock, 18, became the youngest American man to make the Olympic team since Michael Phelps. He will compete in the 800 freestyle.

The previous record of five was set in 2021. Before that, the record was set in 1976.

Indiana University round-up

Indiana University divers Andrew Capobianco and Carson Tyler both qualified for the Olympics in the 3-meter springboard Sunday, bringing the IU Olympic tally to eight athletes.

The top-three finishers were all from the IU program. Capobianco won with a score of 971.80, Tyler finished second with 945.75, and Quinn Henninger took third with 870.50.

Tyler also won the 10-meter event on Saturday, making him the third U.S. diver since 2000 to qualify for the Olympics in both individual events.

Capobianco and Tyler will join former IU diver Jessica Parratto and former/current IU swimmers Lilly King, Josh Matheny, Anna Peplowski, Blake Pieroni and Mariah Denigan on Team USA this year.

IU has sent an Olympic diver to every summer game since 1964.

Coach Cory Chitwood will be Team USA’s open water swimming assistant coach. Purdue’s David Boudia will be the head diving coach. Notre Dame’s Chris Lindauer will be a swimming assistant coach.

Also joining Team USA this year is Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano. He will swim in three events: the 50, 100, and 200-meter freestyle.
