The Monroe County Community School Corporation will have one new member next year.
Tiana Iruoje is running unopposed for the District 4 seat in the Nov. 5 election. The seat is currently held by Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer, who did not file to run for reelection.
Iruoje, who will take office on Jan. 1, has three children in Monroe County schools. She said she filed so she can make a bigger difference in the school system.
“(The board) can support the professional development of teachers, help make some decisions to move the corporation forward,” she said.
Iruoje is the Director of Student Engagement and Success and an adjunct lecturer at IU’s Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.
She’s also on the board of the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools, the Monroe County Women’s Commission and a Girl Scout troop leader.
“In my program with my doctorate, we study universal design learning,” Iruoje said. “That's where everyone is provided opportunities to succeed in whatever path that they choose, so I think that's important. Equity and access is something that I hold near and dear to my heart.”
Four board seats are up for election this year. The deadline to file to run for a school board was June 20.

Running unopposed for another three-year term are April Hennessey (District 2), Erin Cooperman (District 4) and Ross Grimes (District 6).
Although the seats are uncontested, residents will still be able to vote on the seats in the general election.
