Dunn Meadow unavailable for events due to repairs

The university sent out a statement last week announcing that Dunn Meadow will be closed due to repairs.

Dunn Meadow will be closed for events this fall to restore damage from protests earlier this year, according to a statement from Indiana University. It is unclear when the space will reopen.

Tom Morrison, vice president of capital planning and facilities, said the facilities team will replace turf and irrigation system.

“The heavy use of that space since April and placement of temporary structures unfortunately damaged the area, necessitating extensive repairs now that the structures have been removed,” Morrison said in the statement.

Many groups will have to find other locations to hold their events.

Tom Walsh, IU Jazz Studies department chair, said Swing in September was planned to be in Dunn Meadow. Now, he will need to work with WFIU to find a different venue. The dates of the concerts will remain the same.

“I just accept it as a fact,” he said. “It doesn't really matter what I feel about it. It's a fact.”

Walsh said the Prebys Amphitheatre would be an ideal alternative space. The Amphitheatre will be available to use again this fall. Other spaces on campus and even city parks are viable options to host the concert series

“We are not yet at the point of having exhausted the possibilities,” he said. “It’s a short amount of time, but we have to embrace reality. When news comes in, we take in that news and we adjust.”
