Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy fired for alleged misconduct

A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy was fired Friday for “alleged official misconduct” while on duty, his office announced.

A department statement identified the officer as Jeffrey L. Freeman, Jr.

The statement said Indiana State Police notified Sheriff Ruben Marté of an investigation into an alleged incident while Freeman was on duty Aug. 21.

“Sheriff Marté directed his command staff to conduct an administrative review of the incident,” the statement said. “This review found that probationary Deputy Freeman had violated department policy during the incident. As a result, and separate from the criminal investigation, Sheriff Marté placed probationary Deputy Freeman on administrative leave without pay and suspended his police authority.”

On Friday, the statement said, Freeman received a termination notice.

“The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is fully cooperating with the Indiana State Police investigation … Sheriff Marté is committed to transparency to the public we serve and holding members of the agency accountable when breaches of the public trust occur,” the statement said.

The department didn’t say what Freeman is accused of doing.

Freeman had been with the department since March 10.

A spokesperson for the Indiana State Police didn’t immediately return a message left after business hours on Friday.
