Indiana University celebrates Homecoming this weekend

It’s Indiana University’s Homecoming week, and Hoosiers will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate.

The Indiana Hoosiers football team is off to a 6-0 start and will face the Nebraska Cornhuskers at noon Oct. 19 at Memorial Stadium. The game is sold out.

Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” will broadcast from IU at 10 a.m. Competitive eater Joey Chestnut — a Hoosier native — will participate in the festivities.

The Alumni Band and the Alumni Redsteppers will perform at the game. It’s also the first homecoming performance for IU’s recreated Color Guard, which debuted in the spring. IU athletes who earned a varsity letter 50 years ago will also be recognized.

The annual Homecoming parade is Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m. and will run from 13 th Street, down Woodlawn Avenue, to 17 th Street.

Hoosier Hysteria is also set for that night at 7:30 at Simon Skodt Assembly Hall for IU men’s and women’s basketball. Admission is free, but  canned food items are requested to support Hoosier Hills Food Bank.

A statue of musician and artist John Mellencamp will be unveiled on Oct. 18 at the IU Auditorium North Garden. The sculpture was created by IU alumnus Michael McAuley.
