The City of Terre Haute, in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, will host a meeting about the asbestos cleanup at the former Columbian Enameling site.

From 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30, members of the public can learn about the health and safety measures being implemented by the EPA during removal of hazardous materials, including asbestos, at the site.

The EPA hopes to address questions or concerns about exposure to asbestos. The event is in person at the City Hall Courtroom and will also be streamed on the City of Terre Haute YouTube channel.

Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun said a developer tried to build housing on the site after Columbian Enameling closed, but the buildings collapsed.

“We reached out to the EPA, to IDEM, reported the site, found out we were eligible for some cleanup funds, and so we're going to do a huge cleanup project, millions of dollars from the federal government reinvested back into the city of Terre Haute,” he said.

A holding company currently owns the land, which has passed ownership to a demolition company.

Sakbun said the plan is to get the area cleaned up before the city attempts to take control of the site for future development.
