A Bloomington man charged with stabbing an Ellettsville resident in 2021 and assaulting an inmate while in jail earlier this year received a 12-year sentence last week.

Ian Thorpe, 28, pled guilty to aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony.

Monroe Circuit Court Judge Valeri Haughton sentenced Thorpe to nine years for the 2021 stabbing and three years for the jail assault. The sentences are consecutive, but Thorpe’s three years in pretrial detention will count toward the sentence.

Additionally, the court granted Thorpe a year and a month of good time credit, reducing his sentence.

Haughton dismissed Thorpe’s domestic battery and criminal mischief charges that preceded the 2021 stabbing.

Officers arrested Thorpe in 2021, shortly after the altercation in the parking lot of the Wingate by Wyndham hotel on Walnut Street.

The victim, identified as a 27-year-old Ellettsville man, had stab wounds in his left arm and chest.

Court documents allege Thorpe and cellmate De Juan Lamar Kelley beat up a neighboring inmate May 19 in the Monroe County Jail.

Kelley is suspected of the 2020 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Parker.
