A Bloomington woman was given a 15-year sentence Wednesday for driving drunk, killing a driver and seriously injuring a passenger in 2022.
Charity Hall, 49, pleaded guilty to hitting and killing 33-year-old Richard Compion of Bloomington, and seriously injuring his son, who was 5 years old at the time.
Seven additional charges were dismissed.
The Aug. 6 crash occurred at the south I-69 on-ramp on State Road 46 just after 7 p.m.
The probable cause affidavit said a witness saw Hall driving. Crash reconstruction determined her SUV failed to stop at a red light as it traveled east on IN-46. It crashed into the passenger side of a pickup truck as it turned left from IN-46 onto the I-69 ramp.
When police arrived, they found the truck on the guardrail with Compion and his son trapped inside. Firefighters were able to rescue both from the car. Compion was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he died from his injuries. The child was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, where he recovered.
Bloomington officer Kevin Frank saw alcohol containers in the car and said he observed other signs of intoxication. Hall was taken to the hospital for injuries, and a blood draw three hours later confirmed Hall’s intoxication with a BAC of 0.184, more than the legal limit of 0.08.
