The proposed school merger is still on the table, but Monroe school board trustees say they’re excited to move forward with a comprehensive redistricting study first.
The Monroe County Community School Corporation postponed its planned Fall 2025 merger of Childs and Templeton Elementary Schools in November.
The trustees meet for their final meeting of the year Tuesday night.
Board president April Hennessey said the merger discussions led to the conversations the board is having now with engaged community members.
“I think in order for us to really move this forward, it's going to require people to be champions for us in this process, right? And so, I am asking the community to continue to champion this work,” she said.
The board wants the redistricting priorities to include socioeconomic balance and cost effectiveness.
“Our county, our city, is still very segregated in terms of housing, and so we know, and we've said this over and over, but that means that our schools are segregated,” Hennessey said.
Board members also presented a plaque and thanked District 4 Member Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer for her service. She did not file to run for reelection.
