Inmate dies after incident at Terre Haute federal prison

An inmate at the federal prison in Terre Haute has died after being assaulted Monday.

According to a press release, 54-year-old Charles Lee Smoot was assaulted around 7:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second person was also hurt and treated for injuries.

Smoot was serving just over eight years in prison for bank robbery and a supervised release violation. He had been in the Terre Haute facility since last September.

All federal executions are carried out at the Terre Haute facility.
