The Monroe County Democrats selected labor organizer Liz Feitl to fill the county council at-large seat of Cheryl Munson, who died last month.

Feitl defeated seven other candidates in a Sunday afternoon precinct caucus at the county courthouse in downtown Bloomington.

Before the vote, Feitl said she would like to commission a comprehensive study about what the county needed to address the aging jail and delayed justice center.

“What the heck are we missing, what could we do better, what can we do new, and then look at the funding available,” she said.

Feitl retired after serving for nearly two decades as the region’s AFL-CIO community service liaison. She also served on the county United Way board.

Cheryl Munson won last fall’s election but died in December. Munson’s term was set to begin Jan. 1, meaning Feitl will serve nearly four years.
