Continued below-freezing temperatures in south-central Indiana are creating unique challenges for fire departments.
Matthew Bright is the Deputy Chief of Emergency Medical Services at the Monroe Fire Protection District.
“It's fortunate, but we have water available, right? It's there, so it works great for putting out the fires, but it also turns into an ice skating rink pretty quick, too,” he said. “So it absolutely can make it challenging, both getting there, sometimes getting fire hydrants open, etc.”
It’s nothing new for his team. The crew has been training up on ice rescues, but they handle ice and snow on the ground similarly to civilians.
“We have ice melt on everything, right? And some people have the little traction things on their boots so we don't slip and fall while we're out doing work.”
Ethan Sandweiss conducted the interview for this story.
