All-way stop signs will be installed next week at several intersections along Seventh Street in Bloomington.

Stop sign installation begins Monday at Morton, Washington, Lincoln, and Grants Streets, with the goal of reducing traffic hazards. Work is expected to finish by the end of the week.

Stop signs were removed from those intersections in 2021 for the 7-Line project, which is a protected bike lane connecting the B-Line trail and Indiana University campus.

The city says it wants to replicate the success of all-way stop signs installed at Seventh and Dunn streets two years ago, which significantly reduced crashes.

“This change reflects a data-driven approach towards improving safety at these locations,” said Andrew Cibor, City Engineer. “We recognize that change can be challenging and that the stop signs were removed to create an efficient multimodal east/west corridor, but our priority is to ensure that all users—drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders—can navigate Seventh Street and its intersecting streets safely.”

The city says it will continue to track traffic data to assess the impact of stop sign installation. Community leaders and stakeholders, such as Bloomington Transit and the Bloomington Police Department, will continue to offer their input on traffic changes.
