Clinton County Special Prosecutor Chris Vawter says the Jasper County sheriff’s deputy that shot a Hebron man acted in self-defense.

Matthew Huttle, 42, had recently been pardoned by President Donald Trump for his charges related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. Huttle had already served his 6-month sentence.

According to the police report, the deputy pulled over Huttle for speeding. The deputy said Huttle was under arrest, which is when Huttle attempted to grab a handgun from the car. The deputy moved to stop Huttle. Huttle told the deputy he would shoot himself, which is when the deputy shot Huttle multiple times.

Law enforcement confirmed there was a handgun with ammunition in the vehicle, and camera footage appears to show Huttle grabbing the handgun.

The investigation is closed, and no charges will be filed against the sheriff’s deputy.
