IU women down Oregon in Big Ten tourney opener

The Indiana women’s basketball team will face top-seeded USC in the third round of the Big Ten Tournament Friday at noon.

The ninth-seeded Hoosiers advanced with a 78-62 win over No. 8 seed Oregon Thursday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Junior guard Yarden Garzon scored 18 points and junior guard Shay Ciezki had 17 points to lead the Hoosiers to their first ever win over the Ducks, who are in their first season in the Big Ten.

Indiana jumped out to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and led 40-30 at halftime. Oregon cut the lead to six midway through the third, but Indiana extended the lead back to 10 heading into the fourth quarter, then put the game away in the final five minutes.

The Hoosiers improved to 19-11 overall with the win.

Next up is Southern Cal, which is 26-2 and ranked No. 2 in the nation. Friday’s game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
