More crimes reported following IU Greek Life pause

The the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association decided to pause events until March 24.
The the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association decided to pause events until March 24.

The Indiana University Police Department filed reports on several sex crimes involving IU Greek Life days after lifting the three-week pause in March for all IU Greek Life events. The pause ended March 24 and was supposed to address safety and health concerns, according to the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association.

Cases listed on IUPD’s crime log on March 31 show that on March 27 and 28 there was a report of a rape involving sexual assault with an object, as well as two reports of sexual battery.

Public Information Officer Hannah Cornett said IUPD received the reports from the Title IX office, and the incidents were not reported directly to IUPD.

The cases did not list a specific organization but are labeled as “all other fraternity/sorority.” The cases were referred to IU officials to review. IUPD is not responsible for disciplinary actions.

Neither the Interfraternity Council nor the Panhellenic Association has said what steps were taken during the pause to improve student health or safety.

Multiple Greek Life organizations are involved in disciplinary actions this academic year. Phi Sigma Kappa is the latest. The fraternity will not be able to hold new member activities until further notice. It was put on the interim directive Friday after being suspended from all organization activities March 28.

PSK was listed as the location of a domestic battery and strangulation on Dec. 6, 2024. IUPD received the report April 2 from the Title IX office, Cornett said. The individual involved did not report this case to IUPD, and the case has been referred to university officials for review.

A sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, was able to return to business as usual Monday. There were two accounts of hazing reported at the sorority on Jan. 28 and Feb. 1. It was placed on cease and desist Jan. 28 for hazing.
