Former Democratic state representative Dave Crooks, who is moderating the event, said he hopes Messmer will attend, but he’ll send him the audience questions regardless.

“All of our public service members, whether they're Republicans or Democrats, we always want them to succeed,” Crooks said. “But you know, criticism is a very good thing for our government.”

Messmer held a telephone town hall with constituents Tuesday. Attendees said moderators screened questions in advance.

Republican leadership has advised politicians to avoid in-person events, which have drawn angry crowds.

At Messmer’s mobile office hours at the Warrick County Library in March, he asked library staff to call police on frustrated attendees.

Messmer’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
