Both overall crime and violent crime are down in Bloomington, according to the city’s annual state of public safety report.

The yearly report details highlights from the city’s major public safety agencies - the Bloomington Police Department, Bloomington Fire Department, and the Community and Family Resources Department.

Last year, BPD responded to almost 76,000 calls, a 2.4 percent rise from 2023. That follows a yearly trend of higher demand for services.

The Bloomington Fire Department also responded to more calls, with an increase of nearly 8.3 percent, bringing the total to nearly 6,500 calls in 2024.

But the city’s overall crime rate is down by .8 percent. Violent crime is down by just over 24 percent.

Child abuse, though, is up – there were 55 cases last year, compared to 35 in 2023. Neglect also saw an increase of about 52 percent, from 25 cases in 2023 to 38 in 2024.

Larceny had the highest case total in 2024 – a nearly 10 percent increase.

But assault is down nearly ten percent, and domestic battery is down by 5.4 percent. And vandalism dropped by almost nine percent.

There were fewer weapon-related incidents as well, decreasing from 523 to 361 – a 31 percent difference.

The report said more than 78 percent of victims of violent crime knew their assailants. More than 58 percent of assaults occur at someone’s home.
