A local disaster declaration is active in Monroe County. Residents who were affected by the May 16 EF-2 tornado and high winds are eligible for assistance. The following information has been made available through the Monroe County Emergency Management Agency.
Applying for disaster relief
County residents affected by last month’s tornado can now apply for financial assistance from the Small Business Association, as well as the State Disaster Relief Fund.
Low-interest, long-term loans are available for businesses, homeowners, renters, and nonprofits from Monroe County and surrounding counties. Financial aid is also available for qualifying applicants.
The Disaster Recovery Center opens at 10 a.m. June 3 at Ivy Tech, 200 Daniels Way in Bloomington. Residents are advised to go through the main entrance to be directed to the center. The center will be open through 3 p.m. June 18.
Disaster Recovery Center hours:
- Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
- Sunday: Closed
In Linton, the disaster recovery hub is still active. It's located at First Christian Church, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and has Salvation Army resources and recovery supplies, according to the United Way of South-Central Indiana.
If you received damage to your house from the May 16 storm, please submit a report to Indiana 211. Individuals can visit in211.org & click on DAMAGE REPORTING to submit a report. Those without access to the internet can call 2-1-1 or 866-211-9966.
Debris Cleanup
Residents are responsible for their own debris cleanup. A dumpster for tree waste and a dumpster for home debris will be available in four locations through June 6.
Dumpster locations:
- Between Elwren and Harmony Road
- Near East Jackson Creek Drive and South Sandpiper Drive
- Lighthouse Christian Academy
- Monroe County Debris Management Site, 7740 North Fish Road (available by appointment only, 812-349-2020)
Monroe County is not responsible for the removal of private property debris and says residents should not move debris to the edge of the road.
Tarps and totes are available by request to the Emergency Management Office at 812-349-2533.

Sheltering
The American Red Cross is no longer offering shelter at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.
