Cooling stations include the downtown Bloomington fire station at 300 E. Fourth St.

Friday is the longest day of the year with the summer solstice, marking the official start to summer. Most of the U.S. will feel that change right away as a heatwave crosses over most of the East and Midwest.

Monroe County’s Emergency Management Agency opened cooling centers Friday morning at fire stations and all county library locations. They will be open through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says central Indiana can expect the heat index to reach 103 daily between Saturday afternoon and Tuesday evening.

This comes as some homes are still without power from the June 18 storms. Duke Energy and South-Central Indiana’s electric co-op both reported around 3,500 outages Friday morning.

Duke Energy said that there was extensive damage Wednesday afternoon. Teams were still out assessing damages Thursday night, and the company said it may be a while before it can restore power.

The cooling stations are open to everyone. They are not open overnight. Pets are allowed but must be in a carrier.
