During the first half of the 20th century, only 55 books in publication sold more than one million copies. Gene Stratton-Porter penned five of those works, more than any other single author in history. I write as the birds sing, because I must, and usually from the same source of Inspiration.
Gene Stratton-Porter
Gene Stratton-Porter was one of the most successful and prolific writers of her generation, the author of 26 books of fiction, nonfiction, children's works and books of poetry and essays. She was also one of the country's strongest voices that helped launch the modern American conservation movement at the turn of the 20th century. Stratton-Porter was also a pioneer in the field of nature photography, capturing hundreds of images of birds, moths, butterflies and other critters that roamed the Limberlost Swamp area of northeastern Indiana. She penned hundreds of articles and columns for leading magazines, often trumpeting her environmental activism and conservation efforts. Near the end of her life, she took her talents to Los Angeles as one of the first women to own and operate her own Hollywood production company, creating film adaptations of her most popular novels.
