A new type of market has grown up alongside the Kokomo Downtown Farmers Market.
It's called the Kokomo Makers' Art Market, a place where people may come to buy goods and watch demonstrations from crafters, artisans, and amateur inventors.
Mandy Wright-Jarrett, the director of both the farmers and makers art markets, says all of the vendors are required to share their skills, whether or not they have goods to sell.
"We have some people who just come to demonstrate things for fun, just for their passions," says Wright-Jarrett. "We have other people who demonstrate what they do and [are] also selling items as well. They have to be demonstrating a project the whole time they're there."
This is the first season of the Makers' Market, and Wright-Jarrett has been scrounging up local artists and crafters from around Kokomo all summer.
The market has seen wool spinners, wood turners, Middle Eastern drummers and even a solar-powered cotton candy machine.
Currently, the market is funded by Ivy Tech and vendor fees, but Wright-Jarrett says she wants to convince the city of Kokomo to fund the market in the coming summer season.
The Kokomo Downtown Makers' Art Market runs every Saturday until August 18.
