From Page To Mouth: Teaching The New Literacy

The world met Evansville native Adam Henze when he was selected to be the Official Poet of the Indianapolis 500 in 2016 - not your normal venue for poetry! But did you know that Henze is also a PhD candidate in Education at Indiana University? He has seen how writing and performing poetry has helped change the lives of at-risk teens and prison inmates. In our story, Henze reveals why he wants to study the outcomes of teaching slam poetry in classrooms. His mission is to show how spoken word performance can build literacy, a knack for reading the world around us, courage and personal character.
