"Story Telling" is the title of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra's concert. Although Conductor Roger Kalia has picked pieces that hold familiar melodies for older members of the audience there's also a focus on Columbus's youth.
Stories For Children
"We decided on the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg and Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. Each has parts that are familiar from piano lessons or even from TV commercials. We also picked the Marche Slav by Tchaikovsky." For the march, youthful string players will enjoy a chance for a "side by side" experience, sitting in with members of the orchestra.
"I addition to those young players, we have a soloist from the area, Christin Cazenave." Christin is currently a student at IU's Jacobs School of Music. Although she's an undergraduate, she has a long history with her teacher. "I met Professor Cord at a school music event years ago and he suggested that we work together. So I've actually studied with him for six years."
Cazenave is very pleased to be able to play the trumpet concerto by Arutiunian with the orchestra. "It's a gorgeous piece with just the loveliest slow section. I've wanted to play it with orchestra ever since I first worked on it in high school."
